The Dallas Cowboys smoked the New York Giants in Week 1, and are currently second in the Cold, Hard Football Facts Quality Stats Power Rankings metric. The overreactions have been flooding the media, but the Cold, Hard Football Facts is showing that Dallas is legitimate, and we expect this trend to continue in the numbers.
The Giants aren't as bad as they looked on Sunday Night Football. Dallas is just leaps and bounds better than New York and the second-best team in the NFC behind the 49ers. The opener revealed some defensive holes in the Eagles, and these gaps aren't nearly as wide for the Cowboys.
We may be overreacting because Dallas always tends to let bettors down in the big moments, but the defense is fantastic, and this is what it takes to win in the NFL. The Cowboys picked off Daniel Jones twice, resulting in the second-best Defensive Passer Rating in the NFL.
They also ranked first in Defensive Real Quarterback Rating following the opener. Micah Parsons didn't let Jones breathe, so the quarterback quickly forced the ball down the field. A great front seven is key for a strong secondary, and the marriage in Dallas is perfect.
The Cowboys weren't tested on offense in their opening game because they didn't need to score. The defense had a pick-six, and the special teams blocked a field goal and took it the other way for six points. Dak Prescott currently ranks 19th in Real Quarterback Rating because of his lack of production, but this will climb in the coming weeks.
The Cowboys are as advertised on defense, and their ranking should stay toward the top of the Cold, Hard Football Facts. This strength, combined with an expected surge from the offense in the coming weeks, makes the Cowboys a real threat to win the Super Bowl this season.
