The Padres and Mets have been talking about a potential blockbuster involving Noah Syndergaard, and many see San Diego as the best fit for a deal since the Mets are seeking major-league ready players who play second best, center field or catch, or can pitch. San Diego has some of those, especially the pitchers and catchers.
Dan O’Dowd of MLB Network suggested the padres could send pitchers Joey Lucchesi and Chris Paddack plus catcher Austin Hedges, and those players have been discussed, as well as pitcher Logan Allen and catcher Francisco Mejia. A package of three just might work.
The Padres do not want to trade top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr., young pitcher Mackenzie Gore (he’s probably too far away for the Mets anyway) or infielder Luis Urias. Though Urias would fit, one person said, “The Padres intend for him to play for them.”
It’s possible the Mets might want to insist on Urias or something more. Or, they may decide not to deal Syndergaard at all, as there has been no clear consensus that he is genuinely on the block or likely to be traded.
As one person involved put it, “These things are never easy.”
