Jon Heyman: In Goldschmidt, Cardinals gave up plenty for a noted Cubs killer

The Diamondbacks really didn't want to trade iconic player Paul Goldschmidt but made the tough decision to get on with their rebuild. From here, they did well.

Luke Weaver is a solid starter who's had a few great moments, Carson Kelly is a good defensive catcher who can handle the bat, former 37th round draft choice Andy Young has been a big overachiever, and the draft choice is a nice bonus. That's a decent haul for one year of even Goldschmidt.

One evaluator agreed:

"I like Weaver as a guy with number three starter upside, while Kelly is a modern day starter behind the plate and the comp pick helps," they said, meaning that Kelly's pitch framing and defensive skills stand out. "I think it is volume over impact for a rental on a very reasonable salary."

Jeff Passan of Yahoo reported that the D-Backs gave it a shot to lock up Goldschmidt before trading him. Which is really a necessity for a player of that stature and meaning. The guess here is that since Goldschmidt went for the security with his first deal, which turned out well for Arizona, he wasn't up for a discount. Can't really blame him, not after they gave a bigger contract to Yasmany Tomas, who is a minor leaguer, and several fold more to Zack Greinke, who was with the rival Dodgers.

The Astros were the other main team in on Goldschmidt, though they never got close to acquiring him. That's his hometown team. The Cardinals may want to try to lock him up, but it wouldn't surprise anyone if Goldy waited for free agency because of the aforementioned relative discount of his first deal.

For Cardinals fans, there’s something else to be excited about with Goldschmidt, too: He’s a lifelong Cubs killer, with a career OPS of 1.011 at Wrigley Field.
